The Inventor Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison is often called America’s greatest inventor. He created

more than 1,000 inventions in his lifetime. His favorite invention was

the phonograph. People used to listen to music on phonographs. He also

invented the microphone, batteries, an electric pen, and the electric

light. Edison did many experiments with electricity, and he thought

electric lights were the solution to the problems people had with candles

and lamps. Edison thought electricity would be a safer way to give

people light. Edison and his team tried many ways to create an electric

light. In fact, they tried at least 3,000 ways! They worked on the idea

for two years, from 1878 to 1880. At first, the lights only worked for a

few hours at a time. Finally, Edison made a light that lasted for 2,000

hours. His idea worked! Edison wasn’t the only inventor working to

create electric lights. Many other inventors worked on this problem, but

Edison was the inventor that found the best solution.

People hide a box with a stamp and a notebook. They post clues

on websites to help you find the box. Then you look for the

letterbox! You need to have your internet clues, a pen, and

paper. When you find the letterbox, you write your name and

date in the notebook. Then you stamp your paper. You leave the box

where you found it for another person to find.

Comic Books

Comic books became popular almost a hundred years ago. In 1938, the first Superman comic book was made. Long ago, comic books were cheap, colorful, and easy to carry. The first comic book cost ten cents! After the 1950s, comic books weren’t as popular as before, but people still bought them. Today, there are thousands of different kinds of comic books that people can buy. Comic books are still cheap, but they cost a lot more than they did long ago. Today, they cost about four dollars each. How do we know that people still love comic books? In 2014, the most expensive comic book in the world sold for more than three million dollars. That’s amazing! Although comic books have changed a lot in one hundred years, some things are still the same. At over 80 years old, Superman is still a popular comic book character!

Inventions

Inventors need imagination and creativity. The Wright brothers tried to fly many times, but they failed. Finally, they succeeded in 1903. Now that we have planes, our world is very different.

Louis Braille had an accident when he was three. The accident left him blind. At that time, it was hard for blind children to read. They had to touch raised letters. It was easy to confuse Q with O. When he was fifteen, Louis invented an alphabet that used raised dots. It was a big success!

Electric Skateboards

Electric skateboards are a great invention! The first electric skateboard,

or eboard, was built by Louie Finkle in 1997. Finkle was an inventor

who used to take apart machines so he could learn about them. This

helped him understand how to build an eboard.

It was difficult to create a battery-powered skateboard back then. The

batteries and motors weren’t strong enough. This made Finkle’s

skateboard expensive. It cost $995. It took 15 years to solve this

problem. Around 2005, new inventions made it possible to build an

eboard with a stronger battery. Now there are a lot of inventors trying to

create the fastest, cheapest, or lightest electric skateboard. Today you

can buy an eboard for as little as $200.

An electric skateboard has a controller which you use to go slow or fast

and to brake. Old-fashioned skateboards used to have four wheels.

Some of the newer eboards only have one big wheel. These eboards can

go up to 20 mph. So you’ll still need your helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads!
