To distribute is to give out.  The number next to the

parenthesis AND ITS SIGN is given out or multiplied by

everything inside the parenthesis one term at a time.

 

Example:

-4(3x - 5) becomes

-4•3x  -4•-5  which becomes

-12x + 20.

4(2x + 6) becomes

4•2x  +  4•6 becomes

    x + 24

5(3x+ 7) becomes
